If moderation works for you then that is great. Chances are you are not a true alcoholic if you can figure out how to successfully moderate your drinking. For the rest of us drunks our disease is defined by our inability to control our intake.

Now this can become especially tricky because most alcoholics actually can control their level of consumption for a certain period of time. Some alcoholics can even control their drinking for several months or even years at a time. However, note the following two things: One, they will not enjoy the drinking while they are "controlling" it, and will do so only through gritted teeth while being terribly discontent. And two, no alcoholic can maintain this control forever; eventually they will go off the deep end and go on a bender.

So basically, you can attempt moderation in your drinking and if you find success with it then that is good for you. But be honest with yourself and if you slip up or end up drinking way more than you wanted to then own up to it and realize that you have lost control. Saying that you can control it "when you really want to" is probably denial at that point, and you need to realize that most "normal people" (meaning non-alcoholics) are pretty much always controlling their drinking by default. In other words, normal drinkers don't have to struggle to control their intake. If you do, then this might be a serious red flag for you.

Abstinence

If you finally make the decision to do something about your drinking other than simply trying to moderate it, then the time has come to quit altogether. Now this might sound like a death sentence at first but it really is not so bad once you get past the initial detox and start living a real life again.

Please note that the physical detoxification from alcohol is extremely dangerous and can actually be fatal, so do seek out medical supervision if you are serious about quitting drinking. It is actually safer to continue drinking alcohol than to go through a serious withdrawal from it because the withdrawal can produce life threatening seizures.

If you do decide to give abstinence a try then one of the best breaks you can give yourself is to find a local treatment center to check into. There are a number of benefits to seeking treatment:

1) Medically supervised detox

2) Residential program - to learn about recovery

3) Peer support - you're with other recovering alcoholics so you can draw support from this group

4) Professional help - therapists and counselors can give you guidance

5) Medical help - the medical staff might help with medications for overcoming addiction (such as Campral for alcohol cravings, etc.)

6) Aftercare - they can set you up with long term support and programs that can help sustain you on the outside.

So do consider treatment if you are thinking about quitting drinking.

Remember if you are not sure about the whole thing to go try some more moderation. There is nothing wrong with this if you are careful about it. But be honest with yourself about how well the moderation strategy is working for you. If you can control your drinking for a week that is no real victory. If you can control it for a year then that is real progress. But understand that nearly anyone who is wrestling with this question will not be able to control it for a full year and should probably take a serious look at quitting altogether.

How Smoking Effects Your Children

Smoking kills around 114,000 people in the UK each year. In addition smoking can lead to fertility problems and increase the risk of cot death.

Dr Chris Steele, resident GP on TV show This Morning believes there are adverse effects for babies and children when their parents smoke.

"If you're planning to get pregnant the first thing you should do is give up the cigarettes. It does effect fertility but let's say you become pregnant and you continue smoking, you're inhaling smoke - more than 4,000 chemicals being inhaled into your body and those chemicals are reaching your baby as it's developing," he said.

Dr Chris added: "Nicotine is highly addictive, it's 10 times more addictive than heroin. You are subjecting your baby's brain to a powerfully addictive drug.

The baby is the ultimate passive smoker, it can't escape.
If you're in a room with people smoking you can go out of the room and leave. The baby cannot leave the womb and so the baby is trapped. That baby is being subjected to 200 shots of 4,000 chemicals every day caused by the mother's smoking.

Smoking is also a risk factor for cot death."

Dr Chris has written articles on the subject of smoking for more than 30 years. He said the ultimate damage for smokers is that they are "killing themselves."

"One in two smokers will actually be killed by their cigarettes, that is horrendous," he said.

He added: "Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals and the consequences of that is all sorts of diseases. Cancer of the lip, the tongue, the throat, the gullet, cancer of the lung, heart attack, strokes, cancer of the bladder and cancer of the cervix.

Cervical cancer is more common in women who smoke than women who don't,".

The GP said there is help out there for smokers who want to quit but he knows it can be a lonely business.

"Non-smokers don't know what you're going through. Smokers will offer you a cigarette and ex-smokers will say 'I quit like that. No problem at all'."

There are different types of nicotine treatments available now from patches through to prescription drugs. Many surgeries also have smoking cessation services. The True Myths of Skin Cancer

This health article is of importance not just to baby boomers but to their families too. Although more prominent in older people skin cancer can be discovered on anyone. During the current life of most baby boomers exposure to the sun and its consequences have evolved from no real medical concerns to general health warnings. Skin Cancer does not pick and choose its victims - it takes everyone. Recent famous people with Skin Cancer are Anderson Cooper of CNN, John McCain the Republican Presidential Nominee, Nicole Kidman Actress and Justice Roberts of the Supreme Court.

Excessive sun exposure is dangerous and everyone knows it. However, approximately 50% of people over 65 are diagnosed with melanoma or some type of skin cancer. Although we know that sun exposure can lead to skin cancer few of us know what is the right or wrong thing to do when planning an extended day outside.

Some things to consider or change to help protect you:

1. I'll stay under the umbrella and not get burned. If going to the beach - try to remember that the majority of the UV (ultraviolet) light bounces off the sand and water. Thinking that your beach umbrella will protect you is false security. Apply a sunscreen to any exposed skin including your face.

2. All sunscreens are the same. Not true. Make sure you read the labels. Just because it has a high rating does not necessarily mean it will protect you more. Look for a broad spectrum lotion that will block both UV'a' and UV'b' rays. Also try to find one with either Parsol 1789 or Titanium dioxide as an ingredient. Did you know that suntan lotion has an expiration date? You better look because it does. Another important thing to remember is to re-apply your sunscreen every 2 hours. Waterproof sunscreen will not protect you completely although waterproof. It also needs to be reapplied.

3. My sunscreen provides protection completely. I wish this was true however, you need to limit your exposure on the beach...try changing your time so that you are not there during the punishing 10 - 4 time period. Wear a hat with a brim all way around to protect your neck and ears. Baseball caps miss those areas. You can even find clothing today that is UV rated. These fabrics are generally very tightly woven.

4. Skin cancer is always Melanoma. This is really false. There are many types of skin cancers and many degrees too. If discovered early - Melanoma can be removed during an office visit. The problems begin when it or any cancerous lesion is left untreated.

5. My family all had skin cancer. Although an important fact this is not always the case. Generally speaking light skin, freckles and eyes that are light such as blue or hazel run a higher risk of skin cancer and wrinkles too. People with darker skin tones who tan easy are at a lower risk category but can still be vunerable. Completing a monthly examination of your body using a mirror is important with an annual checkup by a dermatologist.

5. I don't go out in the sun much so I am safe. Wrong again, Melanoma can also occur on moles and freckles. It has even been found on the sole or bottom of a foot.

Warning signs are a sudden change in the size, shape or color of a spot. DON'T WAIT! Have it checked.

You mean too much to others to just let it go. It might not go away.

4 Steps in the Art of Fat Loss

After a 31 year journey so far, the same conclusion once again has been reached......there are no shortcuts and "no" there is nothing "new" about achieving fat loss.

Human beings upon a certain point in our awareness begin to acquire the need to create efficiency in all areas of our lives which allows us to make certain repetitive tasks simple. Then as tasks are made simple, some may choose to slip back into unconscious behaviors once these tasks are mastered.

Mindfulness when it relates to health and the goal of reducing your body fat is something that needs to be a conscious act. It should also remain a conscious process for the duration of your life. As we all go through the different season's in our lives many elements will change to reflect our needs and wants during each of these time periods.

And during each of these periods of our lives we need to stay focused on the adjustments needed with our intake of the correct quantity and quality of the foods we choose to balance out our "G-Flux." A term referring to the level of calories you input relative to the energy you output.

Things to consider when determining your calorie intake daily would be the type of body structure you have. Is your body a thin, medium or heavy bone structure determined by the circumference of wrist measurements against your total bodyweight and height?

Are you in a profession that requires the physical activity of a construction worker, fire fighter or mover? Or does your occupation require you to sit in meetings, drive long periods or at a computer desk all day?

Do your personal hobbies reflect physical activities like tennis, running, swimming or are they more mental skills pursuit's like chess, writing poetry, research, etc.? Your body types, activity levels at work and play all help to determine "G-flux" requirements and are used to determine correct quantities of food that are eaten for your particular situation.

Next are the decisions to pick the best quality food you can afford when purchasing your foods. It currently, on many levels in our world today, is not the same world as yesterday. Bloating after your Exercise Routine and new Diet?

Bloating after your Exercise Routine and new Diet? Congratulations! You've taken the first step to changing your life - you've changed your Diet, and started a Exercise Routine, and are expecting results. You've been hard at it for almost two weeks now, and go to check out your Fitness progress on the scale and in the mirror. But wait! What's this? You've started bloating and retaining water, and now feel more uncomfortable and larger than ever! What gives?! How, after all that work and eating properly, are you seemingly gaining weight? Was it all in vain?

To answer this question, one must realize that bloating is a completely natural response to sudden changes in your body. With a Exercise Routine, especially if you haven't had a regular routine in place, and are suddenly working out with high intensity, it can actually throw your body into a bit of a state of shock - your body interprets the extra stress as a physical emergency, and beings to try to stockpile necessary nutrients (which would also explain protein cravings directly after a workout as well!) and water. Another aspect is quite simple: you've worked your muscles hard, and now they've become inflamed. One thing to really keep in mind is that when you're starting your Exercise Routine, you're moving muscles in ways that they're not used to. This causes minor rips and tears, which causes the muscle to inflame to try to stabilize itself while it heals.

Solutions to exercise-related swelling:

Drink at least 64 oz of water per day, and make sure to drink before and after a workout. I've found that if I try to drink water during a workout, I get nauseated. So, what I do to combat this is take a mouthful of water and swish it around in my mouth before swallowing. It's refreshing enough to keep me going, and also keeps me from barfing.

Make sure to eat a small snack before a workout. My Wii Fit is constantly recommending bananas - not only are they a great source of easily-burned carbs, but they've got potassium, which can help reduce swelling and cramping.

Make sure to eat protein after a workout as well, such as two ounces of lean meat, ½ a cup of cottage cheese, etc. This will help your body with muscle repair after a workout. My Fitness Coach always recommends this to me, and I've find that it's helped!

Gentle stretching. Don't ream on your muscles, but some gentle cool-down stretches after a workout, and again after a night's rest to start your "morning after," will help to increase pliability and reduce long-term soreness.

Hot and cold applications - take a hot (not intolerable, but comfortable) shower, and alternate with lukewarm water, or hot and cold compresses can be alternated every 5 minutes for a half hour for relief.

If all else fails - go for an Ibuprofen if you can tolerate it. It has anti-inflammatory properties. As a licensed Massage Therapist, I did recommend this to my clients who absolutely refused to stretch, as an absolute last resort. The only downside to this is that ibuprofen will dehydrate, so it's key to take this with plenty of water.

Conversely, when switching your Diet, if you've been consuming fast food, high fat meals, high fat and high sugar snacks, and then suddenly switch to lean proteins and more fruits and vegetables, you will probably have a relatively unpleasant reaction as your body adjusts to increased fiber and starts to become less tolerant to fats.

Solutions to this:

Increase fruits and vegetables in your Diet gradually - add ½ to 1 cup every few days until you're up to your recommended daily allowance.

Keep track of what fruits and veggies you're adding! Veggies such as broccoli and cauliflower and fruits such as Prunes, Raisins, and peaches have larger amounts of fructose, which can cause an increase in flatulence (and conversely, abdominal bloating).

Drink LOTS of water (at the very least 64 oz a day! This cannot be emphasized enough!) to help flush out the fats and food that have accumulated over the last few days - the increase in fruits and veggies will help to flush these out as well

Monitor Salt Intake - excess sodium = excess swelling.

Talk to your Doctor about possible food allergies if this continues.

Another thing to keep in mind - if the swelling continues for more than a day, or pits (when pressure is applied, an indentation will remain), to contact your Doctor - this may be a sign of a more serious condition.
